How long is the movie seeking a friend for the end of the world

Penny : I couldn't live without you. No matter how long. What do we do now? Dodge : I just want to lay here with you. Just want to talk to you. Penny : Okay. What are we gonna talk about? Dodge : Where'd you grow up? Penny : Well, I was born in Surrey. My whole family are from there. My mum was a journalist before she married my dad.

They never fought. Or at least we never heard them fight. Charlie's the oldest, then Benny, then me. We had a sister but she died when she was born. I still think about her. Dodge : What was her name? What was your sister's name? Penny : Patricia. Patricia Hope Lockhart.

Dodge : That's beautiful. That's a beautiful name. Penny : I wish I'd met you a long time ago. When we were kids. Dodge : It couldn't have happened any other way. It had to happen now. Penny : But it isn't enough time. Dodge : It never would have been. Dodge : I You're my favorite, favorite thing. The rest of the movie plays as a kind of picaresque, pre-apocalyptic road movie, with Carrel and Knightley getting into a series of comic misadventures.

There are bumps along the road movie road, but nothing more, nothing less. The early Petersen section introduces the idea of people who hire assassins to kill them before they can off themselves. But the biggest crime is how easily, as the film glides along, it slips into conventional romantic comedy plot mechanics.

The movie's mood is somewhat bleak but colored with fascinating characters, all of whom seem to have already existed in the margins of the story; they feel alive. Likewise, Scafaria's choice of music is sublime -- Penny carries an armful of treasured LP records with her, even without a turntable to play them -- ranging from the Beach Boys to Scott Wilson.

Each song rings with new meaning in this context, and each character choice has huge connotations. When the final choice is made, it means the world. Families can talk about how Seeking a Friend for the End of the World depicts people's end-of-days behavior. How does their looming fate impact characters' behavior? What do you think you might do in that situation? How do you think the movie might have been different if the world were ending through nuclear war or climate meltdown, rather than a runaway asteroid?
